SINGLE REVIEW: No Reason (NICK MURPHY AND BONOBO)

SONG: No Reason ARTIST: Nick Murphy and Bonobo By now we’ve all recovered from the announcement that Chet Faker was changing his name to….his name. His real name being Nick Murphy, that is, and today saw the release of an ambient little number called “No Reason”, a result of Murphy and Brit producer Bonobo teaming up. Both Bonobo and Murphy are quite fond of a cheeky collaboration, and on this seven-and-a-half-minute journey Murphy soars over the top of an atmospheric soundscape full of pulsating droplets and choir-like tones. No Reason” will feature on Bonobo’s new album which drops this week, and the single is a solid example of the producer’s desire to sonically reflect human existence. And with lyrics from Murphy like “We’re looking like soldiers, waiting to drown, I’m not around no more”, there’s a definite moody vibe – but the overall effect is eerily euphoric. There’s enough solid beats and technical magic to keep it afloat and radio-friendly – but if you’re not one to dabble in electronica, the length and lack of variety may not be to your liking. However, between Murphy’s lush vocals and Bonobo’s otherworldly tones, “No Reason” is more intriguing with each listen. Bonobo’s LP “Migration” is due out this Friday - you can check out "No Reason" here for the time being, and you can check Nick Murphy live in action at across the country at Laneway Festivals starting late January.
