It's very nearly that time again when musical movers and shakers from far and wide descend on Fortitude Valley in Brisbane for four days and nights - yes fellow music lovers, BIGSOUND, aka one of the biggest events on the Aussie music calendar, is back for its seventeenth year!
Notorious for launching of some of the country's most successful artists in the past (including Flume, The Temper Trap, A.B Original, Gang of Youths and more), BIGSOUND has been instrumental in uncovering the stars of tomorrow and shaping the future of the industry, and this year The Soundcheck will be showcasing some of the hottest heavy acts who will be slaying the stages at the BIGSOUND 2018 festival showcases.
Join us as we get "hot and heavy" with some epic up-and-comers in the lead up to this awesome event! And with just a few days to go until kick-off, today we're chatting with the fabulous female foursome from Melbourne that is The Beautiful Monument.
Ripping riffs, blasting beats and a cavalcade of sheer talent - Melbourne's The Beautiful Monument are a total hat-trick with their anthemic blend of metal, punk and rock. Whether tearing up the stage at Unify or unleashing their upbeat yet heaving tunes, there's very little doubt that this quartet of ferociously fun females will be exploding even further into the musical stratosphere in the very, very near future.
But before BIGSOUND kicks off, bass-kween Amy got "H-O-T-A-N-D-H-E-A-V-Y" with The Soundcheck, chatting all things networking, colouring in and, of course, heavy music.
H - HEAVY AND ALTERNATIVE MUSIC IN AUSTRALIA: Describe the Aussie heavy/alternative music scene in three words: “Sick set dude!”
O - OPPORTUNITIES: What made you sign up for BIGSOUND 2018? What opportunities are you hoping will come out of playing at Bigsound? Someone said there was a colouring in table last year .. so like. That please.
T - TELL US A SECRET: What’s something no one else knows about your band? Everyone knows Lizi loves cats. But fun fact… we all have cats! The stereotype runs true.
A - ADVICE: What’s one piece of advice about the music industry you wish you knew when you first started out? Quality over quantity. Network like HELL.
N - NECESSITIES: What are some of your must-have necessities when you’re touring? Petrol and patience.
D - DAY IN THE LIFE: What does a usual day in the life of your band generally consist of? Working. We aren't Justin Beiber. We still need to make money for rent, food… pop vinyls. The important things.
H - HEROES: Who are some of your band’s heroes and musical influences? We all have VERY different influences/heroes but I personally think everything Josh Scogin does is magic. Someone that can go from throwing himself around with a mic in The Chariot/Norma Jean to making catchy noise rock in the ‘68 is a true artist. Talent and dedication oozes from that man.
E - EVOLUTION: Where do you see the future of Aussie heavy music heading in the near future? More brightly coloured jumpers.Followed by 3 Northlane cover bands per state.
A - ABSOLUTE MUST-SEES: What band(s) are you most keen to check out at BIGSOUND 2018 and why? Bare bones - Wild good time rock and roll with a side of VB Eat Your Heart Out - The most talented wholesome bunch of sweeties I have ever met singing sad songs you can dance too.
V - VICTORIES: What’s been your biggest win as a band so far? E.g. an epic gig, great response to a release, or even just band members showing up on-time to rehearsal? Definitely playing Unify. As a Unify attendee the last couple of years, actually getting up on that monster stage alongside bands we all adore was something I'm sure we will never forget.
Y - YEAR AHEAD: What’s your band got planned for the next twelve months? Christmas! And some sneaky little things that you will find out about soon ;)
