What's Big and Sounds awesome? In honour of the insanely epic upcoming Big Sound Festival and Conference in Brisbane tomorrow, The Soundcheck has been featuring an artist from the festival every two days until the event kicks off tomorrow, Tuesday 5th September.
So far we've met Melbourne alt-soul machines The Cactus Channel, blues king Karl S. Williams, lovable indie rock larrikins The VANNS and post-rock heavyweights sleepmakeswaves...and this time round it's formidable Brisbane spunky punks WAAX.
Following the independent release of their punchy five track 'Wild & Weak' EP earlier this year, vibe-punks WAAX come in hot to BIGSOUND after selling out shows across the country. Helmed by the formidable and ferocious Marie DeVita, the Brisbane 5-piece is a live force to be reckoned with.
B (BACKSTORY) TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BAND AND HOW YOU GOT STARTED: Hey! We’re WAAX umm… We’re from Brisbane the home of the Brown Snake, Milton Mangoes and where every household has a copy of Double Allergic and Hungry Ghost. Maz tells me she started the band because she had an unshakable urge to perform and get songs out there. But in all fairness, she just wanted a more wholesome reason to get pissed every weekend.
I (INFLUENCES) WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? ARE THERE ANY NOT-SO-OBVIOUS ONES? Our influences are all over the place. From the likes of the YYYs, The Strokes, Hole and Savages to some of more obscure ones like Kurt Vile, Pixies, Nick Cave and Kendrick Lamar.
G (GIGS) WHAT'S BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE GIG SO FAR? Our Crowbar show on the Wild & Weak Tour! Sold out show with all our friends and fam, it was much choice.
S (SONGS) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SONG TO PLAY LIVE AND WHY? It would have to be Same Same. The crowd always go off to it and it's hella fun to play.
O (ONE OTHER BAND) WHO IS THE ONE BAND/ARTIST YOU'RE MOST PUMPED TO SEE LIVE AT BIG SOUND? Gold Class! Every time they go on tour we go on tour, so i haven’t had the pleasure to see them live yet. V keen.
U (UPCOMING STUFF) WHAT HAVE YOU GOT ON THE HORIZON, ANY UPCOMING TOURS OR NEW RELEASES? Hitting the road with Dunies, Wavves and Hockey Dad in late Sept early Oct, It’s going to be wild. Not looking forward to the post tour blues on that one.
N (NAME) WHAT'S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR BAND NAME? No real story, besides the double AA in the name was Maz’s uncle’s idea. Shout outs to Marco!
D (DREAM TOUR) WHO IS YOUR DREAM BAND/ARTIST TO TOUR WITH? The Strokes!... It will never happen :(
