EXCLUSIVE: Five Things You Didn't Know About QLD Duo LAURA MAC

With more effervescence than that first sip of Maccas Coke on a hot summer's day, the latest single Don't Know What I'm Thinking from Queensland duo LAURA MAC sees the pair pivot from their previous indie-rock stylings into full-blown guitar-pop bliss.

Drawing to mind the likes of jangly Aussie popsters Confidence Man and G Flip, Don't Know What I'm Thinking brings all of the good vibes, glossy synths and a beat that'll 100% ignite your dancing shoes. Teaming up with the legendary Luke Palmer (Dead Letter Circus, Golding, Boo Seeka) and Ian Peres (Wolfmother) on the track, LAURA MAC, aka Laura Machlachlan and Zac Connelley, firmly showcase their melodic prowess, with frothy hooks and sharp production eternally at the forefront of this absolute late-night party anthem.

Adding to the charm, the accompanying music video for Don't Know What I'm Thinking gifts a neon and bubble-soaked wonderland, filmed at the pair's local car wash and featuring an array of the pair's friends dancing the night away. Filmed and directed by the incomparable Colin Jeffs (Jesswar, Yours Truly, Casey Barnes), the clip is entirely the icing on the sparkling cake that is Don't Know What I'm Thinking (and may or may not have me hankering to go for an impromptu dance session the next time my car needs a wash).

With LAURA MAC set to finally perform live since forming at the height of the COVID pandemic restrictions, fans can catch the pair this Saturday 21 May at Solbar in Maroochydore supporting British India, before shows in Brisbane and Melbourne later this year. But before they bust out onstage, LAURA MAC vocalist Laura Machlachlan herself is lifting the lid on five facts you may not know about the band. Read on!

MAGICAL CATS

We have two cats named Penn and Teller. They’re brother and sister and little mixed breed mongrels haha! We rescued them from some crack den down in Ipswich during the pandemic. We’re actually going to see the real magicians Penn & Teller perform a live magic show later this year and I am beyond excited. Zac was in Brisbane for work one day, saw a billboard advertising their upcoming Australian show and bought tickets straight away.

WHAT'S IN A NAME

Zac’s favorite artist of all time is Laura Jayne Maclachlan… oops I mean Laura Jane Grace! ;) She is the frontwoman and guitarist for punk band Against Me and he’s always been a huge fan of theirs. It was funny when Zac and I met and I told him my name, he couldn’t believe that his new favorite girl held his all time favorite name. Can’t say I share much else in common with Miss Grace except that both her and I are loved by Zac.

GOING PLANT-BASED

Zac and I have been vegan for about 12 months. We were vegetarian for a while before that but one night we went on a drunken late night McDonald's run and the only vegetarian option on the menu was fries.. We realized how messed up that was and made the decision then and there to go fully plant based. Our only regret is that we didn’t make the change sooner! We actually know how to cook quite well now as a byproduct of making the switch.

BIG RED BUS

The big red party bus where we usually write and record together can’t be used in summer because it turns into a hell sauna and gets unbearably hot under the Queensland sun. Sisil's party bus is definitely a winter studio.. haha. The good news is we’re going to be able to do some more ‘live’ clips in there again!

COLLINGWOOD CHEER SQUAD

Zac and his family are raging Collingwood football fans. His dad Gavin is to blame for this, not giving him or his brothers a choice haha. His mum Jenny used to follow the Richmond Tigers but Gavin also made her change teams. Bloody Victorians. The cool thing about this part of his family is I get to go to the MCG and the GABBA and experience football fans for the first time in my life. Unlike most Collingwood supporters Zac’s family also have pretty good teeth, thankfully. What’s the joke? What has 100,000 eyes and four teeth? The Collingwood cheer squad.
