EXCLUSIVE: Sydney punks SoSo share their Top 5 Up-and-Coming Artists

pic by Erin Mueller

Having just released their debut single The Henry Lawson Jive, sunny Sydney punks SoSo have quickly found their feet, nabbing a spot on Apple Music's Aus and NZ 'The New Rock' playlists and capturing attention on triple j Unearthed and with online media thanks to their delicious pop punk on show with their maiden tune:

Produced by Stevie Knight (Stand Atlantic, Yours Truly, RedHook) and mixed by James Paul Wisner (Paramore, Underoath, Hands Like Houses), The Henry Lawson Jive sniffs at the anthemic catchiness of pop punk legends New Found Glory and All Time Low with enough upbeat vibes to force a smile on your dial - and an impressive handle on their sonic identity from day one. But as ones to watch already in the Sydney scene, what bands are SoSo crushing on right now? Go read all about it and get to know some of the secret and not-so-secret local icons killing it in the Aussie punk-adjacent world right now.

SUBURBAN

Where do we start with Suburban? The self-proclaimed genre fluid artist just released his absolute banger of an EP ‘Dent’ and it’s gone down a treat. A fresh take on hip hop, Suburban goes from trap heavy tracks like ‘Lifeforms’ to almost Metalcore in ‘It’s Not What You Know, It’s What You Can Prove’. One thing he’s definitely proven is that his live shows are not to be missed – just himself and a drummer, but there’s never a dull moment during the set. Definitely one to watch.

REDHOOK

Can we really say these guys are up and coming? RedHook have pretty much blasted their way into the scene and solidified themselves as a seriously talented and dynamic band. They’ve released 5 original tracks (and 1 killer RATM cover) and each one has been bigger and better than the last. Big things just keep happening for these guys – and we’re big fans.

DOWN FOR TOMORROW

These lads have put in so much hard work and it’s really starting to pay off for them. They’ve really carved out their own sound - straight up, honest as fuck Aussie Grunge-Punk. Their recent release ‘Show Me That You Care’ is a record we really froth. Good to see them getting the recognition they deserve.

THE DEAD LOVE

If you haven’t already heard of them….well…..silly move. These lads are absolutely killing it and their album ‘The Extinction of Unicorns’ was good enough to score them their own limited release of tasty af brewskis (courtesy of Young Henry’s). About the only live show where we’ve seen multiple people punching out parts of the roof – these guys go off live. Get around it.

OK HOTEL

Hailing from Wollongong (down south somewhere, it’s all Wollongong to us Sydney folk), this awesome foursome (no sexual innuendo intended) are starting to make waves in the local music scene. With youth on their side, and the dual vocals of Andre & Joshy delivering pop soaked melodies, we reckon they’ll keep kicking on to the big time. Check em out.
