FAVE 5: Sydney punks SoSo school IMDB with some hot takes on allegedly average movies

With all the sharp sweetness of a Cornetto on a sweltering day, Sydney pop punks SoSo continue to serve up tasty tunes bursting with infectious emotion. Jolting into the latter half of 2020, the group most recently broached their boisterous best with a rollicking ode to being blindsided by heartbreak courtesy of latest tune (Shit) Love Story:
Detailing SoSo lead singer Rhys de Burgh and his relatable tale of an unexpected break-up followed by lengthy rumination and growth, (Shit) Love Story itself builds in intensity and fervour, culminating in an explosive ball of endearing angst and pop punk precision that clearly signposts the continued fortification of the SoSo sound.
With production courtesy of Stevie Knight (Stand Atlantic, Yours Truly, RedHook), and a brand new accompanying music vid on the horizon for (Shit) Love Story, SoSo are on a winner with their recent tune. And for a special treat today, the SoSo team, aka a self-described "offensively average" band, are sharing their hot takes on some supposedly "offensively average" movies. Look out IMDB, SoSo have got your number, and they're coming for you with some examples of underrated cinematic masterpieces! Check them out below!
ACE VENTURA: WHEN NATURE CALLS (1995)
By 1995, Jim Carrey had already starred in ‘The Mask’, ‘Dumb & Dumber’ & ‘Ace Ventura – Pet Detective’. What we’re getting at is, he had proven that in spite of sub-par storylines, zero-character development and a script with 30% dialogue and 70% abstract, interpretive human vocal gymnastics, Jim Carrey IS a cinematic masterpiece. In fact, he could convince film producers to allow a 30 million USD budget for a film about a ‘pet detective’ mission to Africa to save a magical bat. ALL WHILE looking like an off-brand Elvis impersonator. 6/10 is a bullshit rating – this movie alone tackles important social issues such as animal rights, poaching, conservation, cultural acceptance & effects of colonialism, whilst hitting the most important point – bats are a shit animal, humans should stay away.
IMDB RATING: 6/10
SOSO OFFICIAL RATING: 9/10 Jim Carrey-style on-screen mental breakdowns

HOT TUB TIME MACHINE: 2 (2015)
The original Hot Tub Time Machine struggled to sell the fusion between the whacked-out concept of a time travelling hot tub machine, and a believable storyline. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 dealt with this issue by completing killing any storyline at all & tripling down on the pure outlandishness that is a time travelling hot tub machine. Seriously, the high points of this movie are: ‘The Webber Strut’, ‘Choozy Doozy’ & ‘Shotgun to the Dick’. If you don’t understand these references, you clearly haven’t experienced the mind-expanding journey that is Hot Tub Time Machine 2. Look, if there was an award for ‘Best Motion Picture to Watch for a Bunch of A-Grade Scatterpillars on a Sunday Comedown’, this would have won four years on the trot, with current betting odds of $1.07 to take it out again this year.
IMDB RATING: 5/10
SOSO OFFICIAL RATING: 10/10 Shotguns to the dick….in a good way

KUNG POW! ENTER THE FIST (2002)
We were keen on this film as soon as we heard ‘fist’. Surprisingly, this is a comedy and although we were initially left confused, and no longer aroused, it was indeed a big laugh of a film. There’s something endearing about a movie that somehow manages to escalate the utter stupidity from scene to scene. That’s it. Seriously, how did they even think of this kinda stuff? What goes on in some people’s minds? But more importantly…..why the hell couldn’t we stop laughing?
IMDB RATING: 6/10
SOSO OFFICIAL RATING: 9/10 gopher chucks/flying cows/purposely out of time vocal overdubs

WHITE CHICKS (2004)
This movie is a teenager's rite of passage – any movie that has Terry Crews singing ‘A Thousand Miles’ deserves more than 6/10 in our books. Iconic.
IMDB RATING: 6/10
SOSO OFFICIAL RATING: 8.14356789/10 Terry Crews vocal solos

BILLY MADISON (1995)
Billy Madison drew our attention to one of the most important questions of the modern age….which is superior, shampoo or conditioner? On the one hand, shampoo IS the first to be applied to the hair and cleans. However, conditioner leaves the hair silky and smooth, a feat that cannot be achieved by shampoo alone. Look, we’ll leave this one for you to discuss, but we’ll leave you with more thing to ponder …. “The industrial revolution changed the face of the American novel forever. Discuss, citing specific examples”.
IMDB RATING: 6/10
SOSO OFFICIAL RATING: 9.5/10 Swans that should stop looking at me
