INTERNATIONAL FEATURE ARTIST: Rusty Shipp (USA)

If, like me, you find yourself at times lacking a nautical punch to your rock and roll, then look no further than Nashville's very own Rusty Shipp; a blazing quartet of surf rock-meets-grunge that sounds as if Def Leppard and the like moved under the sea with The Flying Dutchman and started a band.

Identifying specifically as 'Nautical Rock n' Roll' (and accurately so, given their penchant for ocean-centric lyrics and surf rock tones), Rusty Shipp have been steadily making waves since their 2017 debut 'Mortal Ghost'. And while their themed tendencies add a humorous slant, this is definitely a band who take their craft seriously - and with rumours of new music on the near horizon, The Soundcheck stole some time with the Rusty Shipp crew to quickly chat influences, favourite tunes and about the time their stage caught fire. Interview below.

  • BAND NAME: Rusty Shipp

  • LOCATION: Nashville, USA

  • BAND MEMBERS: Russ T. Shipp (guitar/vox/songwriting) AJ Newton (drums) Elijah Apperson (lead guitar) Michael Craft(bass)

  • HOW DID RUSTY SHIPP START? Russ T. pulled it together in 2014 because he wanted to start a band that would create music that was as catchy and creative as the rock legends, but with a deeper philosophical meaning that caused people to think about the more profound things of life.

  • HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AROUND FOR? Since 2014

  • WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR INFLUENCES? The Beatles, DC Talk, and Thrice, though most people compare us to Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Chevelle or Muse.

  • DESCRIBE RUSTY SHIPP IN THREE WORDS: Catchy. Chord. Progressions.

  • WHAT'S THE MOST MEMORABLE GIG YOU'VE PLAYED SO FAR AND WHY? One time we opened for Tantric, and part of the stage caught fire during the performance!

  • WHAT'S YOUR CURRENT FAVOURITE TUNE TO LISTEN TO? Just one?! We’re currently loving anything from Audioslave.

  • WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON RIGHT NOW? ANY NEW THINGS ON THE HORIZON? We’ll be touring throughout this year, opening for some bigger bands, and we’re also recording and will be releasing some new material later this year!

  • IF YOU WEREN'T PLAYING MUSIC, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU ALL BE DOING? Is there anything else?

  • IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND WITH ONE OTHER BAND, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY? Definitely The Beatles, because there seems to be no end to their creativity.

  • PINEAPPLE ON A PIZZA, YES OR NO? We’re in disagreement about this one.

  • CATS OR DOGS? AJ is like a puppy, so definitely dogs for him. Elijah and Michael could go either way. Russ T. is definitely a cat.

  • WOULD RUSTY SHIPP SURVIVE A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE? We’d probably put the zombies in a trance with our music. So maybe.

  • AND FINALLY, WHAT'S THE GREATEST SONG OF ALL TIME AND WHY? Impossible selection. So we’re going to have to go with our latest release, “SS Naronic.”

'SS NARCONIC' (RUSTY SHIP)
