Something blissful this way comes from Sydney indie-folk songstress Hollie Col and her debut EP 'Hazel'.
Riding high since her recent release, including a sold out EP launch and a slot alongside The Rubens in Sydney for their album launch, Hollie has struck rippling gold with her debut; across a bite-sized five tracks, this young Sydneysider weaves an enigmatic maturity well beyond her years, calling to mind the earnest feels of Amy Shark and the throaty charm of Gretta Ray. But while the tones are certainly familiar, there's a unique brew of Col's own bluesy folk bubbling away that bypasses the usual derivative singer-songwriter path.
'Hazel' purrs to life with the calmly heartwrenching 'Let Yourself Down', a compelling and driven number that details finding the strength to let go and learn from an abusive relationship. The following tracks tread across wistful longing and the intensity of young love, continually propelled by twanging guitars and Col's glimmering vocals (particularly at the forefront on 'Please Don't Love Someone').
All in all, 'Hazel' is a dreamy arrow to the heart and soul; Hollie Col's unique ability to simultaneously convey power and vulnerability is truly something special, and somehow with this EP she'll make you want to fall in love and have your heart broken again for the first time just to bask in her soothing relief.
