SINGLE PREMIERE: Breakaway (MUULES)
IT'S OFFICIALLY BILL AND TED SEASON, WITH THE THIRD OUTING IN THE SERIES IMMINENTLY WAITING TO HIT OUR SCREENS. BUT WHILE WE’RE ALL WAITING 'TIL WE CAN JUMP BACK INTO THE PHONE BOOTH TIME MACHINE, SUNNY COAST TRIO MUULES ARE GIFTING SOME SPICY HYPE WITH A MOST EXCELLENT COVER OF THE CULT AUSSIE CLASSIC BREAKAWAY DUE TO DROP THIS FRIDAY - AND THE SOUNDCHECK IS VERY PROUDLY PREMIERING THE TUNE TODAY TO GIVE YOU A SNEAK PEEK!
Now more than ever, the majority of us would probably leap at the chance to jump back to a time before 2020 and the perpetual disappointments in its wake. And even though the restrictions and oscillating lockdowns for the past few months have taken a huge toll on creativity (and sanity in general) for many, Sunshine Coast rockers Muules have turned the madness to excellence, jumping in their phone booth and traipsing back to the late 80s to concoct an epic cover of an Australian and film soundtrack icon - Big Pig's Breakaway.
A cult classic for its appearance in the opening moments of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Breakaway became an infamous hit for Big Pig, with its mutated funk punk becoming inescapably linked to everyone's favourite time-traveling metalheads. And while two decades may have passed since the movie first hit the silver screens, Muules have perfected their bass and drums configuration perfectly to align with the guitar-less stylings of Big Pig's track, as well as combining the good with the bad for their 2020 version: celebrating the imminent release of much-anticipated Bill & Ted Face the Music while also embracing COVID-19 fatigue and spinning some fun into the mix.
"COVID restrictions had me diving head first into mixing all the tracks for our [forthcoming debut] album, and it was getting to the point where I needed a break, but still wanted to do something fun...We've never been shy from doing our own take on covers (having done versions of the Presets' My People, Sneaky Sound System's UFO and more), and I had been revisiting Bill & Ted's Excellent adventure where Breakaway introduces the iconic time machine right at the start. I've always loved that song, and wondered what it would sound like with a slightly heavier sound" - Rhys Fox, bassist/producer
While retaining the sparse arrangements and booming percussion of the original, Muules mainline heavier elements into their glossy rendition without sacrificing the iconic industrial whimsy and hypnotic R&B undertones, with the band recording and mixing the tune in-house at bassist Rhys Fox's home studio. You don't have to be a Bill and Ted fan to appreciate this bodacious cover, but it certainly pays loving homage to a significant moment in film and Australian music. The cover will officially be available via streaming everywhere tomorrow, but for now you can grab a sneak peek below. And never forget - be excellent to each other!
