SINGLE REVIEW: Dark Parts (WASHINGTON)

SINGLE Dark Parts // ARTIST Washington

It's no dramatic secret that Washington, aka Megan Washington, is a dynamic musical chameleon armed with silken vocals and winsome melodics. But after a fair few years between tunes, Washington has bounced steadfastly into 2020 with her brand new tune Dark Parts utterly gleaming with offbeat charm and sassy panache.

Marking the first new material from Washington's new studio album due out this August, Dark Parts may on the surface appear as any another charming, tantalising bop. And while the infectious blend of handclaps, driving piano and a deliciously off-kilter 7/8 time signatures tearing at the seams grab you with their ramming charm, Dark Parts delves deep into the journey this enigmatic artist has been on for the past decade. A bright and bubbly venture into the psyche of a woman who has seen and done it all, from operas, TV soundtracks, TED Talks, voice acting and more, Dark Parts offers a moment of triumph for both Washington and the listener as she tempts you to reveal realities beyond that perfect Insta pic while doling out chaotic candy brimming with unbridled glee.

"‘I’m here to have fun. ‘Why not just record music you like with people you like?’ - Washington

Teaming up with Sam Dixon (Sia, Adele, Meg) and Konstantin Kersting (The Jungle Giants, Mallrat, Tones and I) and also busting out some Meg self-drawn daydreams for the accompanying music video, Dark Parts is ultimately a resolute bubble of ballistic fun, flexing in its complexity and exuberance - and a sign of some ferociously amazing things to come in the Washington world. Welcome back, Washington.
