SOUND OFF SATURDAY: Aerials
Today we're kicking off our first ever Sound Off Saturday for the year with none other than Brisbane alt-rockers Aerials!
With two independent EP releases under their belts and a killer new track unleashed last year in the form of 'Drawing Blood', there's a continued booming balance of benevolent complexity and underlying power to this Brissie trio. With the possibility of a new album on the horizon and an appearance at the 10th anniversary edition of Progfest in Brisbane next weekend, it's certainly looking to be a busy new year for the Aerials boys. But in the meantime we grabbed guitarist and all-round awesome human Tristan Chu to chat sound, songs and a secret or two. Interview below.

WHAT'S THE FIRST ALBUM/SINGLE YOU EVER BOUGHT YOURSELF?
It’s a bit of a blur, I think Oasis “What’s the Story?” and Spiderbait’s “Ivy and the Big Apples” were bought from my parents… But I do remember collecting all the coins I couple find, so I could buy Everclear’s “So Much for the Afterglow”!!
WHAT'S BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RELEASE SO FAR FOR 2019? (OR IF IT'S TOO EARLY TO CALL IT, WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE RELEASE OF 2018?)
Too early for 2019 (even though I’m eager for the new Foals!), but Ghost “Prequelle” was definitely the most fun to play loud last year!
WHAT'S YOUR DREAM GEAR SET-UP? ARE YOU LUSTING AFTER ANY PARTICULAR INSTRUMENTS/EQUIPMENT?
My gear-lust is so hardcore, that I have recently un-followed all the buy/sell groups on Facebook! I recently just bought my dream guitar – a Fender Telecaster with Rosewood veneer. It’s so classy and sexy, but has a lot of balls to it as well. I think the hunt for the dream guitar is finally over!
WHO'S YOUR FAVOURITE AUSSIE BAND OR ARTIST RIGHT NOW AND WHY?
Ecca Vandal. She has/they have a great range of raw sounds whether it’s punk or hip-hop… You can’t pigeonhole the genre. The melodies and songs get stuck in your head and their live show is world-class!
WHAT'S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WISH YOU WERE GIVEN WHEN YOU WERE FIRST STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?
Don’t compare other’s success to yours.
WHAT'S ONE SECRET ABOUT AERIALS THAT YOU'RE WILLING TO DIVULGE?
We have the most un-rock n roll day jobs ever – a lawyer, a business analyst and a tech support officer.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR AERIALS?
We are writing like crazy and hoping to do an album. We are at new chapters in our personal lives and getting extremely busy, so we’re savouring those moments that we can get together and make magic happen!
