Wrap your ears in some lilting bliss from Melbourne songwriter Daniel Trakell for this week's Sound Off Saturday - with impassioned lyrics and enchanting melodies, there's a whole lot to like about this engaging artist, especially on his recent Bon Iver-esque track 'Wisdom/Boredom'. And with such a reflective song out in the world, we grabbed Daniel to reflect on sound, songs and some exciting future plans. Interview below.

A cassette tape of Michael Jackson’s Dangerous from my local Brashs in Ballarat.
WHAT'S BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RELEASE SO FAR FOR 2019? (OR IF IT'S TOO EARLY TO CALL IT, WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE RELEASE OF 2018?)
Bottle it In by Kurt Vile was probably my favourite, but I also loved Lilac Everything by Emma Louise, God’s Favorite Customer by Father John Misty, the Kids See Ghosts record, Nico’s Red Truck by Dijon, Skylight by Pinegrove and the new Jack White album.
WHAT'S YOUR DREAM GEAR SET-UP? ARE YOU LUSTING AFTER ANY PARTICULAR INSTRUMENTS/EQUIPMENT?
Top of the list is a Mellotron M4000D. Maybe a Wurlitzer electric piano at some point in time.
WHO'S YOUR FAVOURITE AUSSIE BAND OR ARTIST RIGHT NOW AND WHY?
I love Grand Pine. They’ve only released a handful of singles so far but I’ve loved every one, I love the songwriting and harmonies.
WHAT'S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WISH YOU WERE GIVEN WHEN YOU WERE FIRST STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?
Just focus on writing good songs, as often as you can. Kind of that Malcolm Gladwell 10,000 hour rule. And try not to measure yourself against other people, there will always be someone more talented/successful than you.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR DANIEL TRAKELL?
Playing a residency every Thursday night at Some Velvet Morning throughout February, releasing an 8 track album mid year and currently working on demos for a follow up record. One of my songs will be in a Hollywood film coming out mid year too.
