SOUND OFF SATURDAY: Dom Youdan

Following a stellar release with his creamy track 'Is Your Lover Still Cool', Sydney indie-pop lord Dom Youdan has returned with a brand new single 'Pockets' - and it's as delightfully dreamy as its predecessor.

With the twinkling tranquility of The 1975 and The Kite String Tangle, Dom Youdan brings an evocative warmth to the musical table, merging pop sensibilities with soaring vocals, and the occasional tinge of R&B production, seen particularly on his newest outing.

Traversing the revelations of passing time and the conflicting journey that follows a relationship breakdown, 'Pockets' comes armed with plenty of heart and anthemic tones, coupled perfectly with an accompanying music video that shadows the song's bittersweet thematics.

With his abundance of sonic warmth and infectious electro-pop wiles, Dom Youdan is perfectly poised to usher you into the warmer months of the year in blissful style - but in honour of his latest release, today we chat with the man himself all things songs, sound and a secret or two! Interview below.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SOUND IN THE WHOLE WORLD?

Hmmm. What an awesome question. It’s a toss up between a gentle lapping ocean and the sound of Ryu nailing a hadouken in Street Fighter.

WHAT'S THE FIRST ALBUM/SINGLE YOU EVER BOUGHT YOURSELF?

I believe it was Coolio’s Gangster's Paradise...Either that or a song by Michael Jackson, but it might be best to just pretend that never happened.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RELEASE SO FAR FOR 2019?

Again very tricky. At the moment it’s probably Vampire Weekend’s 'Father of the Bride'. It’s both a wonderful nod to nostalgia (and one of my favourite albums ever in 'Modern Vampires of the City'), while also very much feeling new, more mature and honest. It strikes a lovely balance of being the record they wanted to make, while still staying true to where they have come from, preppy sweaters and all.

WHAT'S YOUR DREAM GEAR SET-UP? ARE YOU LUSTING AFTER ANY PARTICULAR INSTRUMENTS/EQUIPMENT?

I have come THIS close on several occasions to treating myself to the OP1 by Teenage Engineering. I want it so badly!! But, I’m not sure if I actually need it or will use it in my live set up. And because it’s a tape, I wonder how much I’ll end up actually using it or whether I’ll just record in midi. In terms of dream set up, it’s not far off what I have. Guitar, Keys, midi pad and drum pad, a bunch of loops and pedals for experimentation and then an Apollo Duo to make it all sound delicious.

WHO'S YOUR FAVOURITE AUSSIE BAND OR ARTIST RIGHT NOW AND WHY?

I think Julia Jacklin is just a raw, incredible and beautiful artist. I’m adoring Angie McMahon and her album Salt atm, which is pretty much on repeat in my home. Her tone is stunning. Jack Gray is also an insanely talented human being who is an inspiration to see live.

WHAT'S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WISH YOU WERE GIVEN WHEN YOU WERE FIRST STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?

It isn’t just going to happen. You have to work and work and work. And when it doesn’t happen even after all of that, you have to get up and keep going. Also, one of the things I didn’t do enough is really network with other musicians when I was young. It’s inspiring to play and write with other artists. You should try it.

WHAT'S ONE SECRET ABOUT YOURSELF THAT YOU'RE WILLING TO DIVULGE?

Ummmm, well I’m a bit of a geek but it’s hardly a secret. Oh, ok this is a good one. I woke up once in a random house and have no idea how I got there. I’d had a big night and literally just opened my eyes to find myself on a sofa, with no clue as to where I was. Then the person who lived there came down the stairs and they also had no concept of what I was doing there. We didn’t even speak...I just left. It was very, very confusing. I’m sure there’s an amazing story to it but sadly my beer brain won’t let me remember it.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR DOM YOUDAN?

Just applying the finishing touches to my next single, which with any luck will be out pretty soon! And then it’s EP time baby. Touring over Australia too. It’s going to be an exciting rest of the year.
