SOUND OFF SATURDAY: Drunk Mums

Sound Off Saturday returns discussing all things sound, songs and a secret or two, and today we take you inside the sounds of boisterous Melb rockers Drunk Mums.

Part nostalgic flashback, part modern-day rebellion, Drunk Mums have continually taken ears and crowds hostage with their rambunctious brand of punked-up rock. And as of yesterday this thumping quartet unveiled their latest creation 'Urban Cowboy', a 10 track no-holds-barred explosion that pinpoints the group's creative evolution, while still maintaining the cheeky bravado that's endeared them so heavily in a live setting. If gritty riffs and rowdy rock are on the menu, Drunk Mums take the cake and the entire wine list, and they'll be taking this show on the road from mid-November to a town near you.

But before the 'Urban Cowboy' tour kicks off, here's Drunk Mums bassist Adam Ritchie sounding off with The Soundcheck.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SOUND IN THE WHOLE WORLD?

FEEDBACK! That’s a hard one to answer I initially wanted to say farts but I’m 28 and that’s immature

WHAT'S THE FIRST ALBUM/SINGLE YOU EVER BOUGHT YOURSELF?

Pretty sure it was Silverchair when I was like 10 or something? Not sure how much truth is in that though. I wish it was something better than that haha.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RELEASE OF 2018 SO FAR?

Civic – New Vietnam. It’s a perfect throwback to Australian greats like Radio Birdman and The Saints but with a modern post-punk edge at times.

WHAT'S YOUR DREAM GEAR SET-UP? ARE YOU LUSTING AFTER ANY PARTICULAR INSTRUMENTS/EQUIPMENT?

I’ve always wanted a Gibson Flying V Bass. I have an Eastwood Flying BV and hell I enjoy playing it but to have the real thing would be amazing. In terms of an amp an Ampeg Tube head with a big FUCK OFF fridge cab would be ideal but not practical.

WHO'S YOUR FAVOURITE AUSSIE BAND RIGHT NOW AND WHY?

GEE TEE from the Gold Coast. They have perfected the early punk & KBD sound. The band rose from the ashes of another great band called DRAGGS.

WHAT'S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WISH YOU WERE GIVEN WHEN YOU WERE FIRST STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?

Do what you want not what you think other people want from you. In all honesty I started out this way when I was playing music but when I joined Drunk Mums I lost my way. I think that we’re on the right path now.

WHAT'S ONE SECRET ABOUT DRUNK MUMS YOU'RE WILLING TO DIVULGE?

We’re heading to the States next year to meet up with our Texan brothers Trouble Boys and head out on tour. Pretty sure out mates Dumb Punts might jump along for the ride too. Might call the tour “Melbourne in the USA”.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR DRUNK MUMS?

We have our 3rd album & 6th release dropping on NOV 9th followed a 10 date tour with NYC rockers Dirty Fences. Couldn’t be more happy with the record and can’t wait to meet the DF crew.
