SOUND OFF SATURDAY: Odyssey S

It's rare for a love song to transcend clunky metaphors and sappy sentiments, but for Melbourne indie-pop artist Odyssey S, there's a significant balance of catchy writing and sparkling pop production with a unique, engaging twist, seen on the sweet new tune Even When We Let It Go.

Having only emerged on the scene this year, Odyssey S has crafted a sultry and ever-so-textured pop pearler that calls to mind the likes of Ruel, Cub Sport and Dean Lewis while furtively playing to its sonic strengths and crafting up a catchy earworm.

With Even When We Let It Go marking the first introduction to the musical world for this young, non-binary artist, the bar has certainly been set high for an ongoing creative journey. And today we're chatting with Odyssey S all things sound, songs and a secret or two! Interview below.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SOUND IN THE WHOLE WORLD?

My favourite sound in the world is the Cello for sure! It’s so smooth and romantic and really takes you on a journey.

WHAT'S THE FIRST ALBUM/SINGLE YOU EVER BOUGHT YOURSELF?

I think the first album I ever bought was So Fresh 2007! I stand by it.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RELEASE SO FAR FOR 2019?

Hayden James’s “Between us”. It’s such tasteful electronica and it flows through your body, particularly the song “numb (feat. GRAACE)”. The lyrics are great, the bass synths are impossible to criticize and the emotions he creates throughout the album with his various collaborators are mind melting.

WHAT'S YOUR DREAM GEAR SET-UP? ARE YOU LUSTING AFTER ANY PARTICULAR INSTRUMENTS/EQUIPMENT?

Oh my god this is a great question. I would love a Shure SM7B Microphone, a few full-sized midi keyboards with keyboard players, a MalletKAT (MIDI marimba) and marimba player, a mixed acoustic/electronic drum kit and drummer, an Ableton Push 2 MIDI controller, two guitarists, a KORG Kaoss Pad, great analog effect racks, two laptops running Ableton Live (connected via a midi link) and the icing on top: a woodwind section.

WHO'S YOUR FAVOURITE AUSSIE BAND OR ARTIST RIGHT NOW AND WHY?

My favourite Aussie band right now is Ocean Alley. They groove, hard and their writing is so smooth and soulful.

WHAT'S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WISH YOU WERE GIVEN WHEN YOU WERE FIRST STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?

The best piece of advice I could have been given, would be to trust my instincts and do what feels right to me with my music, instead of relying purely on music theory.

WHAT'S ONE SECRET ABOUT YOURSELF THAT YOU'RE WILLING TO DIVULGE?

When I was a toddler/young kid I was obsessed with this Minnie Mouse dress and would wear it constantly. There are SO many great photos!

WHAT'S NEXT FOR ODYSSEY S?

I have a second single that I’m working on, and it’s almost done!!! No spoilers but it should be out within a few months! I’m also working on a tour!!
