NEW SINGLE: "In Red" (HEN)

May 6, 2018

SINGLE: In Red
ARTIST: Hen

The lady in red has been an ongoing symbol in pop culture of fetish and stereotype - just ask Chris De Burgh, The Matrix, or the voluptuous Jessica Rabbit to name but a few. But this week Adelaide artist Hen is taking back the negative connotations of assertive sensuality with her celebration of women and the various avenues of femininity with her brand new single 'In Red'.

As one of the many emerging artists bubbling away in Adelaide, Hen has been crafting her fervent indie-pop tones over the past year, and her glam-soaked twist on the genre with her debut 'In Red' has certainly already turned heads. 'In Red' calls to mind early noughties Kylie Minogue, but with a modern spin that shimmers and sparkles with its cute and catchy beats - but this isn't a brainless little pop gem, with Hen's lyrics deftly stripping back the "hot girl" stereotype and boldly maintaining a coquettish wink with an empowering soul.

Of the track, Hen says: “...as girls, we’re brought up to believe that other women are the enemy. ‘They’ll steal your man,’ ‘They’re prettier than you’. It’s such an ugly way to think. I wrote ‘In Red’ as a celebration of women and femmes and as a challenge to the trend we often see of women being cast as villains for being ‘different’ or outspoken. It’s actually probably the most upbeat song I’ve ever written”.

Whether you're an indie-pop lover or just want a touch of sultriness to add to your day, Hen's 'In Red' is a sassy treat that effortlessly digs deeper into societal assumptions - and it's going to be a fun ride to see what comes next from this passionate artist.
