SOUND OFF SATURDAY: This Time Only

November 23, 2018

Punk sure as hell ain't dead, and one group flying the flag for heartfelt Aussie punk is none other than Sydney's own This Time Only.

Offering up sincere grit and lashings of energy, this Sydney quartet have quickly found their feet following their triple j-worthy debut single 'The Morning After', and follow up release 'Marco Avenue'.

Capably straddling upbeat bops with bittersweet feels, there's a cathartic bliss that comes with the modern nostalgia that This Time Only wield. Coupling clever writing and production, it's only a matter of time before we hear more from this loveable bunch. But in the meantime, we caught up with lead vocalist Matt Collins to chat sounds, advice and (why not?) Good Charlotte.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SOUND IN THE WHOLE WORLD?

The sound of a beer can being cracked.

WHAT'S THE FIRST ALBUM/SINGLE YOU EVER BOUGHT YOURSELF?

One school holidays I had saved up enough cash, and I bought Matchbox Twenty’s “Yourself or Someone Like You”.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RELEASE OF 2018 SO FAR?

West Thebarton – Different Beings Being Different. I love this album for its energy and pace. Lyrically brilliant as well, I love when an artist can make poetry out of the seemingly everyday mundane. Being an Aussie album is also a big plus as well.

WHAT'S YOUR DREAM GEAR SET-UP? ARE YOU LUSTING AFTER ANY PARTICULAR INSTRUMENTS/EQUIPMENT?

I have been trying to get my hands on a Fender Special Edition Custom Telecaster FMT HH in Black Cherry but they have been discontinued by Fender, so I’m having a real hard time finding one.

WHO'S YOUR FAVOURITE AUSSIE BAND RIGHT NOW AND WHY?

I have been listening to a lot of Ceres at the moment. I think they are amazing songwriters, and when I saw them at the Landsdowne in Sydney they blew me away. A really well-rounded band, with a great mix of song styles.

WHAT'S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WISH YOU WERE GIVEN WHEN YOU WERE FIRST STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY?

I found it really hard getting my guitar tones/sound right when playing live. Through a lot of trial and error I eventually figured it out, but I wish someone had helped me out in that instance because when you don’t sound good it affects your confidence, which in turn can affect your overall performance.

WHAT'S ONE SECRET ABOUT THIS TIME ONLY YOU'RE WILLING TO DIVULGE?

We have this really weird ability to play any Good Charlotte song without ever having played it before. It has randomly happened at a few rehearsals and a couple of gigs. Not sure if that says a lot about us, or says very little about Good Charlotte.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR THIS TIME ONLY?

This single is a pre-cursor to a 6 track EP due for release end of the year or start of 2019, dates TBA. From there we focus on touring and getting ourselves out in the scene.
