SINGLE REVIEW: Thought I Could (YORKE)

SINGLE: Thought I Could // ARTIST: Yorke

Boasting a voice beyond her years and calming effervescence, Byron Bay singer-songwriter Yorke steps forward into dynamic dimensions with her latest track 'Thought I Could' dropping earlier this week.

Starting her endeavours under the moniker Yorke only last year, it comes as no surprise that 20 year-old songstress Grace Hughes has been writing music for over a decade for anyone already familiar with her previous sonic gems 'First Light' and 'Wake The City'. And while her early releases have swiftly cemented Yorke as a serious and dazzling contender in the indie-pop world, it's her latest release 'Thought I Could' which spirals her from ingenue emerging artist into bona fide sensation.

Swirling to life with lulling piano and sultry textures, 'Thought I Could' balances stark vulnerability with flourishing hooks as Yorke's tranquil yet robust vocals build into a vivid anthem of idealistic optimism and the mixed emotions that accompany pursuing and achieving your dreams.

Inspired by the anxious night that accompanied the release of her debut single 'First Light', 'Thought I Could' marks a significant coming-of-age for Yorke, both sonically and literally, as the lady herself explains: “We were in the studio watching ['First Light'] being released around the world, while we were trying to write this song. I was panicking at the time, but I think it added to just how vulnerable the track has become...I had to tell someone that I was leaving, and I was really nervous about that going into the session. So, we just used that as fuel for the song to find what I wanted to say to them”.

Currently dividing her time between Byron Bay, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and about to embark on a support run with Jack River kicking off in Sydney later this month, we're set to hear a whole lot more from this captivating artist in the very near future. But for the time being, go wrap your ears around 'Thought I Could' and lose yourself in some buoyant bliss.

YORKE'S BRAND NEW TRACK 'THOUGHT I COULD' IS OUT AND ABOUT NOW, PLUS YOU CAN CATCH HER ALONGSIDE JACK RIVER LATER THIS MONTH, AND ON HER VERY OWN HEADLINE SHOWS IN AUGUST. FOR MORE INFO, HEAD HERE.
