SINGLE REVIEW: Something (G ELENIL)

SINGLE: Something ARTIST: G Elenil

Brisbane is definitely under the spell of a new hip-hop golden age, and charging along for the ride is pocket rocket artist G Elenil who just this week will finally be releasing the first taste of her upcoming EP with new track 'Something'.

While only making her official debut this year, G Elenil has already made her mark with some shimmering singles and live appearances (including Listen Out & BIGSOUND) alongside the likes of Little Simz, Jesswar and Miss Blanks, but now this musician, producer, visual artist and streetwear label owner is upping the ante, and her latest single is a fusion of biting commentary and bouncy vibes that shimmies into your brain with its snappy production.

While not strictly a hip-hop artist, G's feet are firmly planted in the genre, and 'Something' embraces balmy synths and simplistic beats underneath G's coquettish flow that covers life's intricacies, gender standards and flexing her sexual independence beneath the ambiguously upbeat surface - it's a sugar-coated powder keg of bubbly tones and self-empowerment, made even more enjoyable by the accompanying tongue-in-cheek music video that pits G in her neighbourhood with her crew.

G's debut EP 'Kin' is due out next year, and Melbourne kids can catch her live in action at 'Girls To The Front Part 2' on November 12th.
