SINGLE REVIEW: Tar & Honey (MAXI CURNOW)

SINGLE Tar & Honey // ARTIST Maxi Curnow

Well renowned for his prolific guitar and compositional prowess, multi-instrumentalist Maxi Curnow has affirmed his place as one of the most auspicious forces in the progressive sphere with his latest grooving belter of a track: Tar & Honey.

Kickstarting his music industry adventures writing pop tunes with textbook precision, Maxi Curnow steadily evolved to work as a sound engineer, writer and producer, before fate paired Curnow alongside the iconic Forrester Savall in 2015 and cemented Curnow's transcendence into composing in a professional capacity. After a debut album in 2016, scoring him acclaim for his "Karnivool meets John Mayer meets Jeff Buckley" flair, Curnow has since established himself as a dynamic force to be reckoned with, working alongside a horde of prolific musicians and producers (including one of Australia's favourite bass sons Toby Peterson-Stewart from The Omnific). And off the back of some insanely positive acclaim from his recent feature with Rabea Massaad (Toska, Dorje) on Far Gone, Curnow has now launched himself further as a potent powerhouse of all things hooky prog with his brand new tune Tar & Honey.

Leaving little wonder why he's attracted comparisons to TesseracT and other djenty icons, Tar & Honey leaps headfirst into gnarled basslines, virtuosic guitars and jazzy flourishes, as Curnow's lustrous vocals steadily guide and propel the track. And while the song itself traverses particularly heavy notions of gaslighting and trauma, there's an unwavering sense of positivity and catharsis amidst the silky light and crushing shade, with scintillating melodics and immersive textures rounding out the sonic viscera and emotive foundations.

"Tar & Honey is about our journey through pain, how we move through it and ultimately recovery from past traumas. The central theme is gaslighting...it’s the idea of being told something is safe and sweet when it is actually poison to you. I’m sure we can all relate to this happening in some way. But when we go through these things, we can start to acknowledge how pain works, and make an effort to understand it better as a universal problem, that suffering can be learnt through conditioning. So ultimately this song is about harnessing that knowledge to heal...I wrote it to help me set my head straight after a tough time in my life, and hopefully, it can do the same for others too" - Maxi Curnow

Unleashing an ironclad outing to cement Curnow as one of the "next big things" in the prog world, Tar & Honey is ultimately an exciting blend of beauty and carnage that'll rattle your bones, ignite your soul and leave you undeniably wanting more from this talented individual.
